Katarina kyrka (Church of Catherine) is one of the major churches in central Stockholm, Sweden. The original building was constructed 1656–1695. It has been rebuilt twice after being destroyed by fires, the second time during the 1990s. (Wikipedia)

My submission for week 39/52 of the 2010 Challenge. The theme is DOORWAYS.

This is a doorway for light.

I know, another –ahem– creative interpretation of the theme. I’m a rebel, what can I say.

This is my go to lens. A lot has been written about it; bottom line is that it’s optically excellent and cheap, which is a great combination of features in my book. Plus, of course, it does much better in low light than most. I especially love it for travel (it’s fast, it’s light, and I’m not too worried about the replacement cost). I take this thing pretty much everywhere these days.

Stobist: strobe fired through umbrella from camera right, 1/8 power triggered by PW; reflector camera left. I had the reflector really close to the umbrella, and stuck the camera through the small tunnel between the two to take the shot. The white seamless on which the subject sits here is an ordinary piece of printer paper.

Journey along as Dave visits The Springs Preserve in Las Vegas. This is more than a stroll in the park; it is a whole new future for this desert city known for glitz and decadence. With attractions for the whole family, you can make a day of it and take home ideas that will make your home and neighborhood a better place while saving you money on energy and water bills! This brand new complex covers 180 acres and is close to downtown and includes the Desert Living Center, which illustrates “green” building techniques that you can use at home. The Ori-gen Experience is a stunning interactive museum on the history and ecology of the area and the Springs Preserve Historic Site with interpretive trails and a beautiful Botanic Garden. The collection of desert adapted trees and perennials is a must see for any avid gardener! Next in this episode of Garden Travels, Dave talks with Dennis Westler, “The Orchid Doctor”, for the Pacific Orchid Expo staged each year in San Francisco. There thousands of blooming Orchids are on display and available for purchase along with seminars and demonstrations about every aspect of this fascinating hobby.

I climbed the Torre del Mangia’s tower in the Piazza del Campo in Siena before leaving in the morning a few days ago. You can’t help but notice the stark castle-like shadow that is cast from the fortress and makes for an interesting photo. The history of Siena and Florence (its neighboring city/state to the north) is extremely interesting. As these two large medieval urban centers’ economies and militaries grew enormously during the 13th through 15th centuries, the two powers inevitably met many times on the battlefield. Florence eventually gained the upper hand and the city/state of Siena was eventually incorporated into the Florence administration and jurisdiction. Evidence of these two powers and their struggle is evident in the architecture and arts throughout the city.

I’ve decided to continue posting photos as I get around to working on them. I have a lot of photos that I wasn’t able to post while traveling, such as this photo of Castle Stalker on Loch Laich, Scotland. This four story medieval house is one of the more picturesque castles in all of Scotland.

A cousin of mine, and fan of my travels posted a great link on my facebook page a few days ago. It’s a designer/illustrator’s website where he maps out different stereotypes. It’s both creative and absolutely hilarious. The site can be viewed by clicking here alphadesigner.com/project-mapping-stereotypes.html.

This, my friends, is my travel buddy. He’s been everywhere I’ve been since I was four years old, and he will travel with me until the day I die. He’s one of my dearest possessions and I’m glad I chose him

Below is an excerpt from my HDR travel blog www.LostManProject.com. I’ve been traveling a lot lately and have a lot of photos from my travels to post. Feel free to tag along if you’re interested.

Lake Trasimeno is located in central Italy. It’s a beautiful lake with some spectacular Italian sunsets. This lake is actually an endorheic body of water. An endorheic lake is a body of water that has no outlet. Some of the more noted endorheic bodies of water include the Aral Sea, the Great Salt Lake, the Dead Sea and the Black Sea. When in life would you ever need to know what an endorheic body of water is? I don’t know. But if you somehow make it on the show, ‘Who Wants to be a Millionare,’ it might just be the million dollar question. You never know.

Happy Father’s Day!
Here in Nepal, it is now Father’s Day. Today Aakriti and I will travel from Nepal to the United States. Our Father’s Day will be 36 and 3/4 hours long, and the majority of those hours will be spent in the air. I suppose, techincally, a few of those hours will actually belong to Sunday. But since it will be Saturday again when we land in Los Angeles, I’m counting them all as part of Father’s Day (As Yusef Islam — then known as — Cat Stevens — wrote to conclude his song Kathmandu: "Your strange bewildering time will keep me home."

From this "new" father, to fathers in Nepal and everywhere: "Happy Father’s Day!" May each day be a celebration of our most challenging, rewarding, and important job!.

This photograph was taken yesterday (Friday) in Bhaktapur as Aakriti and I shared Nepali tea in the ancient city.

Namaste.
